WINTER PARKING REGULATIONS
Parking is prohibited on all streets or roads within the municipality of the Township of Beckwith from November 1st, 2023 to April 15th, 2024.
It is an offence to plow, shovel or deposit snow from private entrances across or onto municipal roadways. The penalty for non-conformance will be a fine and/or the vehicle towed away at the owner’s expense.
Also, please note that the Township of Beckwith will not be responsible for damages to mailboxes, newspaper containers or other appurtenances that are privately owned and erected on Municipality right-of-ways and are damaged through winter snowplowing operations.
Please remember to adjust your driving speed to suit the prevailing weather and road conditions

Public Works requests that property owners please do not place basketball equipment or any other obstacles on public roads. The Township will not be responsible for any damage occurring because of obstructions.
WINTER MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
In the winter, the public works department is busy plowing, sanding and salting the Municipal roads. The Township is responsible for maintaining 187 km’s of rural roads.
Winter Maintenance activities are performed by the Township of Beckwith from November 15 to March 31 every year.
The Township of Beckwith performs winter maintenance (snow and ice removal) to a level that meets or exceeds Ontario Provincial Regulation 232 – Minimum Maintenance Standards for Roads, essentially snow and/or ice must be removed within a specified time frame based on the class of road. Road classifications are based on the traffic volumes and speed limit for each specific road.
Winter Patrolling
All rural roads are routinely patrolled and maintained to comply with the Township’s Winter Maintenance Standards.
Snow Removal Equipment
The Township of Beckwith has four (4) dedicated plow routes and also utilizes a backhoe and grader to assist with snow removal within the areas of the municipality. Each plow route is between 6 – 7 hours.
Minimum Standard for Clearing Snow
The snow accumulation must be cleared to a depth less than or equal to the depth set out in the table:

Snow accumulation must be cleared from the roadway to within a distance of 0.6 metres inside the outer edges of the roadway.
For a Class 4 or 5 highway with two lanes, the snow accumulation must be cleared to a width of at least 5 metres.
This section only applies during the season when the municipality performs winter maintenance.

To deploy resources to treat an icy roadway as soon as practicable after becoming aware that the roadway is icy; and to treat the icy roadway within the time set out in the Table, after becoming aware that the roadway is icy;
This section only applies to a municipality during the season when the municipality performs winter maintenance.
What can I do to help?
Protect your mailbox: Most times when mailboxes get damaged, it is because plowed snow accumulates in front of it, causing increasing weight and pressure against it over the course of the winter. It is your responsibility to keep the area around your mailbox clear of snow. Mailboxes damaged by snow load off plow equipment will not be replaced by the Township. The Township will replace a damaged mailbox if the damage is deemed to result from a direct hit by plow equipment. Should your mailbox be damaged, please contact the Municipal office. An inspection and assessment will be made by the Public Works Superintendent.
Winter parking: Do not park on the roads or block snow plow turn-around areas.
Snow on roadways: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, it is illegal to shovel, blow or plow snow out onto a roadway. It is also very dangerous and can cause oncoming vehicles to lose control. Please use caution when clearing your driveway and always be aware of the traffic around you.
Summary
The public works department will attempt to provide the best winter maintenance efforts given the weather conditions. Yet, during certain hours and under certain weather conditions roads may become snow covered. Drivers will be expected to use extra care in these situations.
